SIDECHAINING IS REAL !!! ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ‘‚
Let me explain ๐Ÿค“
One of the complaints I often hear about using sidechain compression style techniques is that "it's unnatural"... or words to that effect (as if that even matters, but okay...). ๐Ÿ™„
But I've long said that, in reality, our hearing system is quirky, and *does do* something akin to a sidechain compression effect under certain circumstances... ๐Ÿ—œ
For example, when someone speaks to you in a noisy environment, the ambient noise *can* seem to lower in volume as compared to the voice you're focused on. There's no doubt a psychological element to this (what we focus on inevitably affects our perception), BUT I've always suspected a physiological element to it... ๐Ÿง
ANYWAY, today I've experienced the perfect example. I'm working on a mixdown of a track with a big sub bass playing a sort of stabby off-beat pattern... ๐Ÿ‘
But it's hot in here. I switched on the air con and the machine got quite loud for a moment... ๐Ÿค”
When I solo'd the off-beat sub bass in my earphones, I noticed the sound of the air conditioner pumping rhythmically in time with the music. I'd never noticed that effect so clearly before. ๐Ÿคฏ
It's REALLY stark, like someone put ShaperBox on the AC, triggered by the sub. ๐Ÿ˜
I KNEW it. So sidechain compression-style effects DO mimic natural psychoacoustic phenomena. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
