PHRASE OF THE DAY
Está a chover?
[ESH-tah uh SHOH-vehr]
= Is it raining?
✅ Present tense (what's happening right now)
✅ Simple yes/no question
✅ Works everywhere (Beiras mountains, coast, city)
✅ Immediate practical use

GRAMMAR BREAKDOWN
1. "ESTÁ" = IS (Present Tense)
Está is the present tense of estar (to be/location + condition).
Use for CURRENT situations, feelings, weather.
Está a chover = It is raining (right now)
Está quente = It's hot (right now)
Está bonito = It's nice (right now)
2. "A" + GERUND = -ING Form (Continuous Action)
The "a" before the verb creates the continuous present.
It means the action is happening RIGHT NOW.
Está a chover = is raining (happening)
Está a nevar = is snowing (happening)
Está a fazer sol = is being sunny (happening)
This is different from simple present:
Chove = It rains (general fact)
Está a chover = It is raining (right now)
3. QUESTION WORD ORDER
Portuguese flips subject + verb in questions:
Normal: Está a chover.
Question: Está a chover?
Same structure, just rising intonation!

PRACTICE TASKS
Task 1: Point and ask
Look outside RIGHT NOW. Say "Está a chover?" or the correct weather phrase.
Task 2: Weather walk
Walk around. Say to 3 locals in Portuguese: "Está bonito hoje /Está a chover" depending on the weather
Task 3: Morning habit
Every morning this week, say out loud:
"Está a chover?" or correct weather for today.
Task 4: Record yourself
