How to be a digital nomad and teach online to Vietnamese students.
Vietnam is a country with a high demand for learning English and other subjects, such as math, science, and business. Many Vietnamese students are eager to improve their skills and prepare for exams, careers, or studying abroad. However, finding qualified and affordable tutors in Vietnam can be challenging, especially in rural areas or during the pandemic. That's why many students turn to online platforms, such as Preply, Hey Tutor, and University Tutor, to find tutors from around the world who can teach them via video calls.
You can take advantage of this opportunity and offer your services as an online tutor to Vietnamese students. You can set your own schedule, rates, and curriculum, and choose the students you want to work with. You can also enjoy the benefits of working remotely, such as flexibility, independence, and diversity. You can travel to different countries and experience different cultures, while still earning an income and making a difference in your students' lives.
How to get started and teach online to Vietnamese students. Decide what you want to teach. You can teach English or any other subject that you are qualified and experienced in. You can also choose to teach general or specific skills, such as conversational English, academic writing, TOEFL preparation, algebra, physics, or accounting.
Choose an online platform to work with. There are many online platforms that connect tutors and students, but some of the most popular ones for teaching Vietnamese students are Preply, Hey Tutor, and University Tutor. You can create a profile on these platforms, upload your credentials, set your availability and rates, and start applying for jobs or receiving requests from students.
Prepare your teaching materials and tools. You will need a reliable internet connection, a laptop or tablet, a webcam, a microphone, and a headset to teach online. You will also need to prepare your teaching materials, such as lesson plans, slides, worksheets, quizzes, and games. You can use online resources, such as Google Drive, YouTube, Kahoot, or Quizlet, to create and share your materials with your students.
Adjust to the time zone differences. Depending on where you are based, you might have to deal with time zone differences when teaching Vietnamese students. Vietnam is in the GMT+7 time zone, which means that it is 7 hours ahead of London, 12 hours ahead of New York, and 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles. You will have to find a time slot that works for both you and your students and be flexible and adaptable to their needs and preferences.
Build rapport and trust with your students. Teaching online can be challenging, especially when you don't meet your students face-to-face. That's why it is important to build rapport and trust with your students and make them feel comfortable and motivated. You can do this by using their names, asking them about their interests and goals, giving them feedback and encouragement, and using humour and fun activities to make the lessons enjoyable.
For using Tutoroo in Vietnam, check out the information on a previous post here
Preply has a straightforward process to join, you can set your own rates and there is no need for formal qualifications, but as you are in competition with others you may wish to bolster your chances by at least taking a TEFL or equivalent qualification.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find specific instructions on how to apply as a teacher on University Tutor. You may want to visit their website or contact their support for more information. And it appears to be for Americans only?!
Average Costs Per Hour.
- Preply: Tutors charge anywhere between $10 to $38.90 per hour, with the average being around $18.30.
- HeyTutor: Tutors can set their hourly rate anywhere between $20-$100, though the company recommends an amount between $25-$40 for greater success.
- University Tutor: Tutors on this platform charge anywhere between $35-70/hour.
As I follow up my research, the sites I investigate are not attached to any one country or the students from that country, as I use google etc and ask what platforms students use from their home country, this leads my posts and gives it a sense of categorisation.
