To add to the recent post for teaching online and attracting Chinese students, the following is my research into 3 sites that seem to be popular in Thailand for Thai students.
The 3 companies are TeacherOn, Gurugooroo, and Tutoroo. All companies require native speaking ability and passion over formal qualifications.
To become a teacher on TeacherOn, you need to follow these steps:
1. Complete your teaching profile: This is the first step to contact students and teaching opportunities.
2. Contact students: Once your teaching profile is complete, you can contact students for potential teaching opportunities.
3. Wait for students to contact you: Students can also contact you directly.
In terms of qualifications, you should have:
-Basic computer skills
-A good internet connection, and a computer/laptop.
-Command of the subject you are going to teach
- Digital pen for most academic subjects. I was confused on this request, it would seem that some sort of whiteboard or digital interaction is required.
Please note that the platform uses a system of coins for contacting students. Many students are free to contact, but for others, you will need coins¹. The number of coins required varies with the competition among teachers. If a student doesn't even check your message within 15 days and doesn't have a verified phone number, TeacherOn gives a full refund for the coins used to send that message.
After you contact a student, you and the student decide the terms, the work to be done, remuneration, and the payment method¹. Teachers deal directly with students or hiring organizations.
Remember, coins don't expire, ever. If you can't pay for coins, you can wait for students to contact you (free for you), apply to jobs that are available for free, or see other options for how to get coins besides paying for them.
As this site uses a ‘token’ system it is not something I would sign up for, they appear to encourage competition amongst teachers to use coins to get students.
To become a teacher on GuruGooroo you need to follow these steps:
1. Download the GuruGooroo application: You can download the application on your mobile phone/tablet or use their website on your computer.
2. Register: You need to register and login to their platform.
3. Apply to teach: You can apply to teach online jobs here for any subjects of your expertise i.e. English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Math, Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.
In terms of qualifications, you should have:
- Expertise in the subject you are going to teach.
- Basic computer skills.
- A good internet connection and a computer/laptop.
GuruGooroo also supports group teaching like Zoom or Google Meet. It allows students to share tutoring fees among peers. Students can interact and exchange ideas with friends in the group while learning. For tutors, group learning can bring more income.
The better reviews and ratings you get, the better chance you can attract more students. It truly reflects your performance as a passionate teacher.
To become a teacher on TUTOROO you need to follow these steps:
1. Fill out the TUTOROO sign up form: You need to provide your basic information such as your name, email address, password, mother tongue/native language, and the city where you want to teach.
2. Accept TUTOROO terms and conditions: Before you can proceed, you need to accept the terms and conditions of TUTOROO.
In terms of qualifications, you should have:
- Expertise in the subject you are going to teach.
- Basic computer skills.
- A good internet connection and a computer/laptop.
TUTOROO helps you find more students who want to learn your mother tongue online or offline, in your city. By finding you new tutoring jobs weekly, their team will help you keep your calendar fully booked. Most popular tutors on TUTOROO earn up to $8,000/month (seems a lot)
The better reviews and ratings you get, the better chance you can attract more students. It truly reflects your performance as a passionate teacher.
TUTOROO will let you teach full or part time, they will take the first two weeks of your salary as payment to the company, after that the full income is for the teacher.
From an email I received…
“Hi There, As for the payment arrangements, the first 2 weeks' fee will be paid to TUTOROO. In case the student decides to discontinue within the first 2 weeks, the tutor will be paid out half of the taken lesson fee. In case the student continues after the first 2 weeks, the student shall pay the tutor directly from the 3rd week onward.
Are you looking for a language tutor or would you like to join the TUTOROO Community of Tutors?
Next up is either Vietnam and or Japan!
