Firms began removing manual tasks with simple workflows and bots. Then came outsourcing. My last firm built an entire practice in India where many early-level data entry roles went. Now we’re entering the AI phase. Today the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a weak jobs report. At the same time, companies are openly attributing layoffs to AI. Anthropic’s research even suggests a “Great Recession for white-collar workers” is possible. The career ladder many of us climbed — junior analyst → senior → manager — is changing. If you’re early in your career or still in school, my advice is simple: Learn AI. Learn automation. Learn how systems work. Don’t compete against machines. Learn to work with them and orchestrate them. That’s exactly why I created the AI + Automation Lab — a place where people can learn the skills needed for the new workforce.
