I'm not a physio. And that might be the best thing that ever happened to me.
Let me be clear, physiotherapists are incredible! Some of the best minds I've ever worked alongside, learned from, and leaned on have been physios. This isn't a story about not believing in that path. It's a story about taking a different one. I didn't go to university. At different points in my life I was drawn to different things. Soft Tissue Therapy, Pilates, Strength & Conditioning, I followed those threads. That path didn't come with the title of physiotherapist, and rightfully so. I haven't studied physiotherapy. I haven't earned that title. But the path I did take led me somewhere I never expected - and shaped me in ways I couldn't have planned. Without that traditional title I had to earn every room I walked into. I had to prove myself. To clients, to clinicians, to people within my own field. And because of that I had to make sure I really knew what I was talking about, because someone was always going to ask me to show it. At first I thought that was my greatest weakness. I know now it was my greatest strength. For the first six years of my career I was doing 12 to 14 hour days across two clinics. Mostly general population - every condition, every pathology, every body type, every goal you can imagine. I loved every case. Every person who came through the door was a new puzzle, a new opportunity to learn, grow and collaborate. I got to work with some incredible athletes along the way too, helping them perform at their best. But it was the everyday people, the ones in real pain, the ones who'd been told nothing could be done, the ones who'd "seen everyone" who shaped me the most. I was also incredibly lucky with mentors. People I sought out, and people who somehow found me. Across Soft Tissue Therapy, Physiotherapy, Pilates and S&C. The greatest thing they gave me wasn't a technique or a protocol. It was a mindset. A willingness to keep learning. To sit comfortably with not knowing everything, and to lean on others when you need to. To understand that growth never stops, not for your clients, and not for you!
