Luke 9:23 "Then He said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.'" Jesus gives us three clear requirements for anyone who desires to become His disciple. Discipleship isn't simply believing in Jesus—it's becoming like Him. 1. Deny Yourself What does it mean to deny yourself? It means asking an honest question every day: "Is what I want aligned with what Jesus wants?" Our flesh naturally craves comfort, control, recognition, and self-will. Yet Jesus calls us to surrender our own agenda so His purpose can become our priority. Every day we choose whether self will sit on the throne—or Christ. 2. Pick Up Your Cross Daily Notice Jesus didn't say to pick up your cross occasionally. He said daily. Discipleship isn't a Sunday activity; it's a daily decision. Every morning we intentionally embrace God's mission, His calling, and His assignment for our lives—even when obedience requires sacrifice. Your cross is not merely your burden. It is your commitment to faithfully follow Christ wherever He leads. 3. Follow Him The Greek word often translated "follow" (akoloutheō) means to walk in the same way as another—to accompany, imitate, and remain close behind. The goal of a disciple is not simply to know what Jesus taught. The goal is to live as Jesus lived. 👉🏽To think like He thought. 👉🏽To love like He loved. 👉🏽To serve like He served. 👉🏽To obey as He obeyed. In the first century, disciples walked so closely behind their rabbi that the dust from the rabbi's sandals would cover them. May we walk so closely with Jesus that His character, His priorities, and His purpose become evident in every area of our lives. Reflection Questions: - What area of self do I need to surrender today? - What cross is Jesus asking me to carry with faithfulness? - Am I merely believing in Jesus, or am I truly following Him? Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to deny myself, faithfully carry my cross each day, and follow You so closely that my life reflects Your heart, Your character, and Your mission. Amen.
