Card of the Week: Reading the Land ⛰️
One thing I’ve learned over the years is the land is always talking — you just have to slow down enough to read it.
When I look at mountains, creeks, old seabeds, faulted rock, and erosion cuts, I don’t just see scenery… I see clues. Soft sedimentary layers can tell stories of ancient oceans. Metamorphic zones can hint at heat, pressure, and mineral change. Igneous rock can point to deep earth processes. And erosion? It often reveals what’s been hidden.
That’s a big part of prospecting and rockhounding — learning to recognize patterns and read what the ground is showing you.
I love making these Cards of the Week because they help break big ideas into simple field knowledge we can all use, whether you’re brand new or have years in the hills.
This one is about starting with the basics: read the land first, then look for the minerals. The clues often come before the discovery.
I’d love to hear from you:
What’s one thing the land has taught you?
Do you read drainage, rock type, old workings, or follow float?
Thanks for being part of this journey with me.
