The following are books that I would highly reccomend to anyone thinking about joining any SOF component.
First up is Becoming a Supple Leopard by Kelly Starett, The best military athletes understand the importance of recovery and this is the textbook on how to become your own physical therapist. Could not reccomend this enough.
If SFAS is on the horizon then I would reccomend, The Chosen Soldier by Dick Couch. Though a little dated and some things have changed, this book gives good insight into the 18X pipeline.
For insight into what an ODA can do on a deployment there is, Hammerhead Six by Ronald Fry. This book is written about a dive team ODA in Afganistan and the work they put in on this particular deployment. It is also a unique perspective getting insight into what the National Guard SOF community has to offer. Defineatly worth checking out.
For those with ambitions of becoming a batt boy and joining the Ranger Regiment there is, Sua Sponte also by Dick Couch.
If you want to learn the history about the SF regiment, I reccomend, From OSS to Green Berets by Col. Aaron Bank. This book is written by the father of the Green Berets, from his early days with the Office of Strategic Services and his training with the French resistance, to his tour of duty in Indochina and the creation of the Army's Special Forces Group.
Another book with great insight into what deployments can look like there is, Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton. This book has also been made into a movie, 12 Strong, and tells the story of the first US forces in Afganistan after the events of 9/11.
