This week, and got to catch up during the coffee hour (which was a lot of fun) and something we discussed was being a full-time musician. As somebody who loves to make and study music, it has always been a potent question, “can I make a living this way?”
The answer: Yes, and it likely won’t look the way you imagine.
The days of honest music creation w/o publishers is behind us. AI music is coming in, and “the industry” is profiting big time by playing what works.
Can we make a new song and have it change the world? Unlikely.
Can we make music and change the lives of other musicians around us? Very likely.
I believe that taking on the mantle of artist has always been a challenging and daring task for humans throughout time. It’s a risk for someone who is rigid in their ways of thinking.
To BE a musician is much deeper than just making money off your music. It means collaborating, teaching, learning, creating, trying, struggling, and listening despite what comes up.
I want to know what YOU think!!
What does it mean to you to be a musician?
Can a musician “make it” in this society? What does that even look like?
What do you want your music to do for the world?
