In my work as a Special Education teacher and in the development of Math Confidence School, I have learned that helping diverse learners succeed in mathematics requires a shift away from deficit‑based thinking and toward a strength‑based, confidence‑focused approach. Students thrive when we recognize their abilities, honor their learning profiles, and engage their families as partners in the learning process. Many learners with differences in processing, attention, or executive functioning enter math spaces believing they are “not good at math.” This belief rarely reflects their actual potential; instead, it reflects years of experiences where instruction did not match their cognitive style. My role as an educator is to help students rebuild their relationship with mathematics by showing them that their thinking is valid, their strategies matter, and their learning pathways are worth celebrating. A strength‑based math environment begins with identifying what a learner can do. For some students, this might be pattern recognition; for others, spatial reasoning, verbal explanation, or real‑world problem‑solving. When instruction aligns with these strengths, students experience early success, which becomes the foundation for deeper engagement. Confidence is not an abstract concept—it is built through repeated moments of “I can do this.” As I build Math Confidence School, one of my goals is to create resources that help families understand how their child learns and how they can support math development in ways that feel natural and accessible. Home‑based math experiences—such as cooking, measuring, sorting, budgeting, and noticing patterns—allow children to see mathematics as something they already participate in successfully. When families celebrate these moments, learners begin to internalize a new identity: “I am capable.”
