I just wanted to Share some insights I have learned from these books... I have finished "Listening" to the Audio Book my Jeff Olson, The Slight Edge... and it is an Awesome book.
... while reading that book, he highly recommended I get "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell ...and this is Yet Another Amazing book....
...I don't really have time to do a full "download" of Why these books are so great AND GOOD for ME right now...
....but I have to at least give you a Tiny Bit of what I am getting from them.
I will start with this one:
The Slight Edge:
....long notes... but I think it is worth your read.
The Slight Edge - My Notes (The Book That Changed How I Think About Everything)
Hey, so I just finished "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson... and honestly... this book is kinda blowing my mind...
The Core Idea (That Hit Me Hard):
Look... it's not about the big moves... it's about doing simple little things EVERY DAY... and I mean like... ridiculously simple things... reading 10 pages... exercising 15 minutes... writing down 3 things you're grateful for...
But here's what got me... it's not KNOWING what to do... it's actually DOING it consistently...
Ralph Waldo Emerson said it: "Do the thing and you shall have the power"...
...and that's the secret everyone misses... all the information in the world means NOTHING if you don't use it...
The Part That Punched Me in the Gut:
He talks about how people stop doing the simple things that made them successful once they become successful... and then they slide right back to where they started...
...like... how many times have I done that?... gotten some momentum going... then stopped the habits that created it... and boom... back to square one...
It's the "How to Do the How" that matters... not just the "How"...
...it's your PHILOSOPHY... your ATTITUDE behind the actions... it's the understanding behind why you're doing what you're doing...
Show me what a person does... and I'll tell you their philosophy...
The Stuff I'm Actually Going to DO:
Chapter 5-6 really hit different...
Slow down to go fast... don't fall for the "quantum leap" trap...
...because here's the thing... you can actually REGRESS by trying to make huge jumps...
"Some day" doesn't exist... you have what you need RIGHT NOW... you just can't see it yet... this isn't a lottery...
Successful people don't buy lottery tickets...
Luck is just being PREPARED through simple daily actions that CREATE opportunity...
...and breakthroughs?... they're not some magical moment... they're the result of CONSISTENT steps done over a LONG period of time...
Stop looking for the miracle... BE the miracle...
The Happiness Chapter (Chapter 7) - This One Got Me:
Happiness LEADS to success... not the other way around...
...like... we've got it backwards... we think "I'll be happy when I'm successful"... but it's actually "I'll be successful when I'm happy"...
He talks about these 5 things to do EVERY DAY (learned from working with Shawn Achor):
- Write down 3 NEW things you're grateful for every morning ...trains your brain to hunt for the positive...
- Journal for 2 minutes about one positive experience in the last 24 hours ...write down EVERY detail... forces your brain to relive it...
- Meditate daily ...nothing fancy... just watch your thoughts for 2 minutes... stops the negative thinking...
- Do one random act of kindness ...he recommends writing an email thanking someone...
- Exercise for 15 minutes ...any little activity keeps you positive...
...and he says start with just ONE of these if it feels overwhelming... the ripple effect will handle the rest...
When you show people what happiness has done for them... that 10% who are naturally happy jumps to nearly 50%...
The Ripple Effect (Chapter 8):
What you do affects everyone around you... and they affect others around them...
...we're all here to reach our greatest potential and create abundance for everyone around us...
We have a RESPONSIBILITY to do what we're good at...
...I want to make other lives better... and that's my responsibility... pay it forward... figure out how to do that even after you're gone...
The Penny Analogy (Chapter 9):
You have to start with the penny...
Would you rather have $3 million right now... or a penny that doubles every day for 31 days?
Most people choose the $3 million... but the penny hits $10.7 MILLION by day 31...
...that's the slight edge... small actions compounding daily...
Read 10 pages every morning...
...do the exercises...
...give a compliment every day...
...each of these is a penny...
***By the end of one year... you'll be 3X more knowledgeable, fit, and liked...
The Two Paths (Chapter 10):
Positive people say: "If it's going to be, it's up to me"...
Take full responsibility TODAY...
Successful people do what unsuccessful people don't want to do...
Focus on the FUTURE... not the past... look UP and you'll think of the future...
Life is NOT a practice session... it's REAL...
Make small, consistent changes every day... and you'll see big changes in the end...
Everything is always in motion...
Mastering It (Chapters 11-13):
All that's required is to take the FIRST step... if you fall, get up and take the second, third, fourth... one at a time... just like when you were a baby learning to walk...
Be the 5% that succeeds...
Sharpen your AXE... the AXE is YOU...
...continuous learning... reading the RIGHT stuff... taking small, continuous action...
Book smart is NOT enough... street smart comes from being out there DOING things...
The journey starts with a single step...
Re-read books you've already read ...they'll give you new perspective...
Course correction is constant...
The shortest distance between two points is NOT a straight line... there's no such thing as a straight line... you're always navigating...
...you're constantly getting new input... making adjustments... staying on track...
Fill your mind with POSITIVE thoughts... because you'll create what you think...
Your subconscious can remember a VAST amount of information... so feed it good stuff... positive thoughts and actions...
Once you learn something well enough... your autopilot (subconscious) takes over and does it automatically...
...you create it first with INTENTION with your conscious mind... then hand it over to your subconscious...
Learn through mentors...
Find someone who's already mastered what you want to master... and model them...
You are the AVERAGE of your 5 closest friends...
Form a MASTERMIND...
Napoleon Hill said all successful business people had one...
Your members MUST be among the 5% that want to succeed and will do ANYTHING to get there...
The Slight Edge Allies (Chapter 14):
Slow and steady wins the race...
Do 20 minutes of exercise EVERY DAY... not 1 hour and 40 minutes ONE day a week...
...this works for ANY goal you're after...
Got a lot of incomplete things?... give 15 minutes each day to knock them out systematically... one at a time...
Power of reflection:
Instead of writing what you WILL do today... write down what you DID do at the end of the day...
People who feel good about themselves do good business...
The 7 Habits (Chapter 15):
Habit #1: Show Up
Habit #2: Show Up CONSISTENTLY
A habit is something you do without thinking... automatically... and it starts with a CHOICE you make...
Make good habits over time... use baby steps to cement them...
Just show up and you'll rise above 50% of everyone else...
JUST SHOW UP...
Wait, watch, work... do NOT give up...
80% is showing up every day...
Habit #3: Have a Positive Outlook
See the glass as at least half full... or overflowing...
Attitude creates action... action creates results... results create destiny...
Habit #4: Be Committed for the Long Haul
Take inventory of your blessings... especially when you're feeling down...
Everyone gets into a funk... you can't know what's GREAT if you haven't had really bad things happen...
Show up consistently... not just for one day... or one month... 250 days a year... give yourself some slack...
Plan, Cultivate, Harvest...
The book "Outliers" talks about the 10,000 hours rule... that's what it takes to cultivate outrageous success...
If you put in 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, for 5 years... that's 10,000 hours...
Are you willing to put in 10,000 hours to get what you want?
Habit #5: Cultivate a Burning Desire Backed by Faith
You need to SEE YOURSELF ACHIEVING IT...
Napoleon Hill interviewed Andrew Carnegie... and that's how "Think and Grow Rich" came about...
Carnegie's philosophy: Desire backed by faith... KNOWING you're going to get there...
Your desire must be BIG... and you keep your eye on your target...
Habit #6: Be Willing to Pay the Price
Sometimes you have to quit the soccer team...
No, you don't need to make a HUGE sacrifice... just small little steps... a penny a day...
It means giving up something... doing the small things every day... consistency...
What do you need to let go of to reach your success?
Habit #7: Practice Slight Edge Integrity
Honesty... what do you do when no one is watching?
You made a commitment to read 10 pages each day... are you doing it?
Are you writing down three things tonight that you'll focus on tomorrow?
You have a boss: YOU...
Living life is like being an entrepreneur... you're SOLELY in charge of your own life...
whether you like it or not...
Show up consistently with a positive outlook... even when no one is watching...
There are 2 kinds of habits:
those that serve you...
and those that do NOT serve you...
Three Steps to Your Dreams (Chapter 16):
Step 1: Write It Down!
Make your goal so vivid that it becomes REAL in your MIND...
There is NO "try"...
Make pictures of it... speak it out loud...
Ask yourself: WHAT and WHEN? ...makes it more specific...
Goals are dreams with deadlines...
Create a concrete deadline...
Step 2: Look at Them Every Day!
Use autosuggestion... do this twice a day... EVERY day...
It needs to BE in your subconscious mind... a CONVINCED subconscious mind...
Surround yourself with the belief that YOUR DREAMS ARE REAL...
Surround yourself with the right people and the right environment...
Step 3: Start with a Plan
You need a plan to get OUT of the starting gate...
But know this... the plan will NOT get you there... but it's how you GET STARTED...
If you don't have that plan... you'll NEVER get started...
Don't make the plan too detailed... it's only there to INITIALLY get you started...
You NEVER know what will happen before you START with a plan and move in that direction...
Change your vocabulary to: "Can," "Sure," "I will try it out"...
Books He Recommends:
- "The Power of Thinking Big"
- "The Millionaire Next Door"
- "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell
My Biggest Takeaway:
This book is the antidote to the "quantum leap" mentality... to the "someday" trap... to waiting for the big break...
It's about the DAILY disciplines... the small actions... the penny doubling...
...and honestly... it's making me rethink EVERYTHING I'm doing with Speed MasterMind...
Because the whole point is: little moves done DAILY... that's what changes lives...
...not big workshops once a quarter... not motivational speeches... not "strategies"...
It's showing up... being consistent... having a positive outlook... and being committed for the long haul...
This will change people's lives...
...if they actually DO it...
Read this book. Then read it again. Then DO what it says.
That's the slight edge.
See you at the top...as I will DRAG you There with me ;-)
Please share your thoughts... these are notes I took while reading the book.
