Many years ago I found myself temping local to where I lived because a contract that I was meant to start fell through. Whilst London had better and higher paying temp roles, I could just see my pay being eaten up by London Transport so decided to work local. I registered with an agency who immediately got me work. It was admin but I did not care even if what I was earning in a week what I normally earned in a day. It was money and I needed it. Anyway..one of the jobs was admin for a sewage company.They were so friendly, swore like troopers but I gave them credit for berating each other for swearing in front of the 'lady'! One Friday as a treat management said they would pay for lunch and we chose a Chinese takeaway and I was given the task to order and pick up. Simple right. They gave me the name said the place was close and gave be the cash and order off I went in my little smart car. It seemed to take forever to get to the restaurant and I cannot write what was going on in my mind. I arrived placed the order and waited and whilst waiting I got a call from the office. 'What's taking you so long? At that point I was ready to blow but knew I needed the money so took a breath only to feel deflated and foolish on hearing the words ' It's only across the road!'. Tail between my leg, humble pie in hand as it turned out that there were two Chinese restaurants with the same name and I had not done my due diligence to confirm which one. You know they would not let me live it down. I was there for another month and each Friday was specifically dedicated to roasting me. I share this as sometimes we find ourselves in situations that challenge who we believe we are and force us to delve deep and come face to face with who we really are.
