Maybe you've thought about it.
Maybe not seriously. Maybe just for a second. But it crossed your mind.
What if I just walked away? Started over. Found someone who actually respects me. Someone who doesn't roll her eyes. Someone who pursues me for once.
If that thought has ever crossed your mind, you're not alone.
Every man struggling in a marriage has had that thought at some point.
And most Christian advice won't even acknowledge it exists.
They'll tell you to love harder, serve more, pray longer. They'll quote Ephesians 5 and tell you to die to yourself.
But they won't name what you're actually feeling.
So let me name it:
Maybe you're exhausted. Maybe you're tired of being dismissed. And maybe you've wondered if it would just be easier to start over.
When you're in that place, it feels like you only have two options:
Option 1: Stay and suffer.
Keep doing what you're doing. Keep getting rejected. Keep walking on eggshells. Keep feeling like a stranger in your own home.
Just grit your teeth, endure, and hope it gets better.
Option 2: Leave.
Walk away. File for divorce. Start fresh with someone who actually appreciates you.
Escape the disrespect. Escape the cold shoulder. Escape the constant feeling that you're not enough.
Both options feel terrible.
And that's because they're both the wrong option.
There's A Third Option
Option 3: Don't leave her. Leave the old you.
The version of you that got you here. The version that's been coasting, passive, spiritually empty.
The version that's been leading from depletion instead of overflow.
That's the man who needs to go.
Not your wife. Not your marriage. The old version of you.
Leaving doesn't fix the problem.
Because a new external life, or a new woman, can never solve an internal problem.
The disrespect you're running from? It's landing so hard because you're already empty.
Luke 17:21 - "The kingdom of God is within you."
Not in your circumstances. Not in a new marriage. Within you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
You don't need a new wife. You need to become a new man.
And let me be clear... your wife isn't perfect. She has her issues. She's said things she shouldn't have said.
This isn't all on you.
But here's the truth: you can only control you.
You can't change her. You can't force her to respect you.
But you can become a man worth following.
And when you do, you're no longer carrying the same wounds. The same emptiness. The same desperation.
Whether she follows or not, you're no longer defined by her response.
Philippians 4:11-13 - "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances... I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Paul wrote that from prison. Not from a perfect marriage. From prison.
His peace didn't come from his external life. It came from who he was in Christ.
That's what you're missing.
Not a better wife. Not a fresh start.
You're missing being grounded in who you are in Christ—regardless of what's happening around you.
And when you have that, you don't need to ask "what if I left?"
Because you're already free.-TM
