What everyone got wrong about the Lexus LFA
There is that believe that the exhaust sound was tuned by the musical branch of Yamaha - that was actually not the case... at least if you believe what the LFA project leader Tanahashi Haruhiko wrote in his book "LFA - The Roar of an Angel". Unfortunately he didn't go into more detail about the exhaust design phase, but he mentions 3 people involved by Name: Hayashi, Torimoto and Tamura. Looking up the names I could find a couple patents, some of which clearly show the LFA exhaust. The most interesting one was one where they wrapped a coil of coolant around only one of the exhaust pipes leading to the rear muffler. (JP2008180136A) Cooling the exhaust pipe slows down the pressure wave, and will have a similar effect to making the exhaust pipe longer. I don't think they used it in the end, but very interesting that they even though about it. In the book there was also a company mentioned, I haven't heard of before: https://www.sango.jp/en/tone.html It's an interesting read, even tough I had no idea what formants are.... after looking up how the human voice works, I now have at least a rough understanding what they were trying to achieve, but that's for another day. For clarification: Yamaha the music company had some involvement with the LFA. They were the ones suggesting drilling holes in the carbon fiber chassis to let the engine intake sound into the cabin.

What's this for?
Welcome, not much to see here just yet, I've literally just made this. The few people that bought the exclusive content from maisteer.com had to go through a Zoom call with me first - so I could actually ask them what they would want. The one common request was to learn more about the science behind exhaust sounds - something we have in common. I would to have a F1 engine engineer and music professor talking to each other someday, but the YouTube comment section is the wrong place for that. For general technical discussions about exhaust sound this should be a much better place, but let's see...
