After 25 Years or so which Scribers are the best? My 2 cents ..
I've been using the Veritas Transfer/Log Scribes since back in 1998, and the same pair is still going strong today—over 25 years of heavy use on real log builds across Canada, and they perform just as well as the day I got them. What makes these stand out is the smart design at a solid price point. You can easily fit two standard pencils (it comes with a good hard one included), and angle them both independently. That setup lets you get into those tricky, tight spots or awkward contours where a single pencil just won't reach without fighting the tool. Not to mention double scribing for lock notches and Square Round Notches. The adjustable arms, rotatable double-level bubbles (for keeping everything plumb and level), and the hardened steel pin option make it super versatile for precise full-scribe work on logs. A lot of the cheap knockoffs skip that dual-pencil flexibility or have flimsy adjustments that slip or bind, so they end up frustrating more than helping. Even some of the pricier alternatives don't always match this level of practical usability for everyday log scribing. Here in Canada, you can grab the Veritas Transfer/Log Scribe (with case) directly from Lee Valley Tools—they're the main distributor, made in Canada, and shipping is straightforward. Current price is around $179–$189 CAD (depending on any sales or exact listing—check the site for the latest). Link to check it out: Lee Valley Veritas Transfer/Log Scribe If you're new to scribing or upgrading tools, this one's been a reliable workhorse for me all these years. 🪓 After I figure out how to get the first classroom going we can do a course style demo on how to set and properly use and abuse a set of log scribers. Also how to scribe on any surface without spending a bunch of money on fancy moon pens, the answer to that one is way more quick and easy then you might think. Chances are youve already got it tucked away in a drawer full of misc somewhere. 😁
