Gracie Barra
Has anyone trained at a Gracie Barra Gym? I'm going to take a trial class tomorrow because I have always wanted to try them out. I am very aware that some folks think they are kind of the "Big Box Store" of Jiu-jitsu (other than GU) but I'm excited for the class
Building My Gracie Garage ๐Ÿฅ‹ | Share Your Home Gym Setups
Having my own martial arts school has always been a dream. ๐Ÿฆ Of course, a garage is not an academy but it's one of the first steps toward making that dream a reality. The goal is to create a small, safe training space where I can: โœ… Drill fundamentals โœ… Get more reps โœ… Train with trusted friends Right now, Iโ€™m deep in the setup phase: - Choosing between 1.25โ€, 1.5โ€, or 1.875โ€ mats - Deciding whether to add a subfloor for safety on concrete - Balancing budget, durability, and long-term growth Iโ€™ve been reading reviews, watching setup videos, and talking with other garage owners to avoid expensive mistakes. This isnโ€™t about building the perfect gym on day one. It's about starting small, starting safe, and starting now. Once itโ€™s ready, Iโ€™ll share photos, costs, and lessons learned for anyone thinking about doing the same. Shoutout to Kyle ๐Ÿ”Ž @Kyle Blay , you posted your setup in the check-in thread and it looks solid! ๐Ÿ’ช What mats are you using? How thick are they? Do you feel like they are safe for takedowns on concrete? I am trying to decide between 1.25โ€ vs. 1.5" vs. 1.875โ€ mats, so any recommendations would really help. I'm mostly concerned about double legs and rear takedowns and such. Thanks in advance! ๐Ÿฅ‹ Your Turn Do you have a home gym or training space? - What mats are you using? - Do you train takedowns at home? - Any setup tips or lessons learned? Drop your setups, pics, and recommendations below so we can build something everyone can learn from. ๐Ÿฅ‹๐Ÿ
Supplements?
I started taking BCAA and Creatine. Noticably less sore after hard workouts. Anybody else take supps? I never have before but they seem to help.
For the aspiring blue belts
I thought this was a great video by one of John Danaher's best students & competitors. https://youtu.be/ik67r-xYpk8?si=tjF-Od8Oiylik-hN
