Do you ever catch yourself mid-spiral, arguing with someone who isn't even in the room?
For years I didn't even notice I was doing it. A random thought would show up and within seconds I'd built an entire story around it. Most of it was negative self talk and conversations I didn't even recognize as negative self talk.
Then I came across a simple trick from Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now and it's become one of my favorite pattern interrupters.
Here's how it works:
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in. Let your body relax. Then ask yourself, either silently or out loud: "I wonder what my next thought is going to be."
That's it. That's the whole practice.
The moment you ask that question, something shifts. You're no longer inside the thought loop, you're watching it from the outside. And that tiny pause is enough to interrupt the stress response and bring your neural system out of fight-or-flight.
This is the Hermetic principle of polarity in action, really. You can't hold two opposite states at once. You can't be lost in a thought AND be the observer of it at the same time. The moment you become the observer, the spiral loses its grip.
And it's in that gap, in that space between one thought and the next, where the present moment actually lives.
I invite you to try this the next time you catch a spiral starting. Just ask the question and notice what happens.
