Simple ways to teach functional math
I’ve often seen posts on homeschooling forums about curriculum for homeschooling or unschooling. Many parents new to it get caught up in books and formulas or are at a loss about where to start. We have found that keeping it simple and blending the education into every day activities allows the children to learn without it being a heavy handed traditional class room model. Get your kids baking or cooking with you. Measuring cups and measuring spoons are a great way to warm up on fractions and counting less than a whole number. Build with your kids. A measuring tape is a great way to demonstrate adding fractions. Yes this is using the standard measurements, and here in Canada we largely use metric, but learning fractions is crucial to more complex problem solving. For builders, lumber is still sold in standard measurements!

So here are a few of things that we have been doing around the homestead lately! We have experimented with baking sourdough in the fire pit, and it was sooo good! I built a small below ground greenhouse just to experiment with the concept. I have started building a small workshop beside the house out of reclaimed wood from pallets. The Adirondack chair is also built from recycled pallets. So much going on that we would love to share with everyone! So we would love hear from anyone out there interested in similar ideas. Please let us know ow who you are and approximately where your from!
