How to get fluent fast in any language.
Heads up! This post took me about an hour to write and it is LONG but filled with value
So if you have the attention span of a gold fish its probably not for you :)
Asked me how to get fast in any language and I personally think this a very unique and interesting question.
And I was wondering what fast is for you.. for me its weeks.. or even days
But Wenhao said months.
Learning languages DOES take months if you are actually consistent and do use techniques and methods that are effective. That's normal
And that only happens if you focus on 2 main areas of language learning but I will get to that later
1 thing that I see is that adults don't want to get out of their comfort zone Cognitively
And honestly learning languages is neurological stress
I read a study as I usually do about neuroscience from the National Center for biotechnology information
And 1 tidbit that I personally really resonated with was:
"Constructing a new cognitive framework—essentially building a new mental model for understanding, organizing, and retrieving information—is difficult and stressful because it forces the brain to deviate from efficient, well-worn neural pathways and engage in intense, resource-intensive processing. This process involves neuroplastic reorganization, which places a high cognitive load on working memory and triggers stress responses"
This pretty much means that learning language IS difficult and a bit stressful i you are actually learning it. If its easy and you aren't feeling challenged then that means you aren't actually growing
I like making stuff simple which means they are easy to follow but not easy which means they are easy to do.
Now that we understood that.
I want to get to consistency and time..
Something a lot of people struggle with.
And honestly time is just priorities.
Everyone has 24 hours which means that if you don't have time to learn a language then its not high enough on your priority list. SIMPLE! :)
Now about consistency we had a whole 1hr call about this a couple weeks ago.
But the problem isn't staying consistent its actually what you are DOING consistently
Thats the problem....
Some people are consistent but they are learning a language in a way that will either ruin their pronunciation or make then understand it but not speak it or have them recognize but not master it
im looking at u duolingo :)
SO then we come to what I wanted to talk about which is the 2 aspects of language learning and 2 areas that I focus on
#1 is Comprehension and this is understanding and thinking in your target language
And to get better at comprehension you need more input which is just finding ways to listen to or read your target language
In Comprehension the 3 most effective things you can do is:
1: Comprehensible input - Consuming stuff that you understand 60-70% of.
2: Shadowing - Listening to and speaking in real time (This is a mix of both input & output)
3: Having a conversation with someone
There are some more but these are the 3 most effective ones
And then there is a second aspect or area to language learning which is composition
#2 Composition is pretty much taking a thought and transforming it into something that you say or write.
To improve your composition you must create more - pretty much speak more and write more
I personally when I have my study sessions focus more on composition then comprehension because it is WAY more effective and better. I think a 1:2 ratio is perfect. Ok now the 3 most effective ways to get better at composition are:
1: Mirroring - Listening to someone online and then pausing and repeating exactly what they say
2: Story speaking - Picking a topic and talking about something in your target language and then reviewing it and growing
3: Having a conversation with someone
There are LOTS of aspects of language learning like: Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Understanding, neuroscience so I will be creating more videos on that and also make more posts in the future.
PS: If you drop your #1 Takeaway and a question - I will send you over a Freebie that I spent 3 weeks working on about building a language learning foundation to get you started.
Rooting for you 🙌🏻🏆
