Alright 👋, just had a "lesson learned" moment I want to share with the group.

I'm building a voice agent on Vapi for a client. To make sure it was solid, I ran the built-in test suite:

12 test cases
3 attempts each
36 actual phone calls

Cost: ~$0.40 per call = roughly $14-15 for one test run

Result? 7 passed, 5 failed.

🤑 So now I need to tweak the prompt, re-run, probably iterate 5-10 times before everything passes cleanly. 🤑

That's potentially $70-150 in testing costs alone.

And the client wasn't quoted for any of this. That's on me.

Here's what failed (for those curious):

1. Silent caller handling: The agent was supposed to use a silence recovery prompt, then politely end the call. Instead it just immediately said "goodbye." Across all 3 attempts, it never handled it correctly.

2. Quote request flow: The agent detected the caller wanted a quote but never actually presented the session offer or a matched package. It skipped critical steps in the sales flow.

The testing genuinely caught real problems.

AI testing AI actually works. It just costs money every time you run it because each test is a real phone call.

My takeaways:

Always budget testing into your client pricing. This is QA. it's part of delivery.
Don't re-run the full suite every time. Only re-test the failures.
Read the transcripts first. Understand what went wrong before burning another $15.
Set a testing budget cap so you don't spiral.
