Filming myself used to be a frustrating mess, always coming off scripted and robotic.
Here's how I fixed that:
- Address One Person NOT an Audience.
This makes the viewer feel acknowledged as a person, while taking the pressure off of me. They don't feel like a face in the crowd, I don't feel the stress of speaking to 300 people.
We're just two people having a conversation.
2. Make Eye Contact with the Lens.
When I film with my laptop, I end up looking down the lens, which creates a creepy eyeline.
Low tech hack - I'll literally put a kleenex box under my laptop to raise the lens.
When the lens is eye level, it creates the eye contact I would have in a natural conversation.
3. Slow Down
Speaking slowly gives my words emotional weight while giving my brain a chance to catch up so I'm not scrambling with what to say next.
4. Bullet Points > Memorized Script
I write down my talking points on a sticky note and put it right under my lens. Now I'm not struggling to recall 18 paragraphs, I can just talk naturally to create an emotional connection.
Here's a quick video going over all of this

Also for a fun drinking game, do a shot every time I say "On the flip side" ๐
