For thirty years I dreaded the question "what do you do?" — I never had a tidy answer. It turned out the dread was the work: a conflict I hadn't learned to govern, the same one many of the people I work with carry.
I've spent those thirty years in peacebuilding and mediation, at street level, with real people in real conflict. My PhD grew from hundreds of hours with the bereaved and with people serving lifetimes. I'm a qualified mediator and psychotherapist, no longer practising — I'd rather teach.
This isn't therapy, and it isn't a cure; some things never resolve. It's the craft of making peace where peace looked impossible, turned inward: learning to govern the civil war within, negotiate honest treaties with a past that will never apologise, and build a life of purpose, meaning and love — regardless of what was done to you, or what you did.
If you've ever dreaded that question too, this is for you.
