Hey brother, the time was right and I felt it those nights, on the backs of what we knew and the places we would find. Around all the turns and the parts my brother car took too, the endless 3am nights that hung over us and into the next work day. And we cleaned golf clubs and greeted members the next day laughing talking about the next night coming. You were central to my childhood and you were braver with girls and funnier with words and border line insane at times. You were a cannon ball, most of all, you were a sparkler in the summer you were a boy too grown up to be a man, your father didn’t give you anything and yet you had it all figured out. You were hurting and I was too, but not as much as you.
Back in those summers, Marco was that centre of it all. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. He was just himself, all the time. I still remember the night we finally
Met his polish girlfriend and their friends. It was the first moment I felt grown up. I felt like I belonged and I was the cool kid. I was trying to be an athlete and I was quite a golfer, I played music and no one knew. I was mysterious and I was always intense. But those nights with some mikes hard and a sticky kitchen floor I dance with that polish queen and we laughed and we reminded ourselves of what we set out to be. We ran through the parts of boyhood together. I drank until I had my fill and I learned what it was to be young. I drove my car the next morning out of there, put on those khaki shorts and clementine shirt with “Chris” On it, and rode to work for 6am. Bring the carts up for the day yes sir yes maam a wry smile in my eyes with bags under them to boot.
We think we need to put it all together in life and make a change and commit to discipline and the self lonely pursuit of being better. But the root of all development comes from you and a mate just riding around in golf carts, access to the place, sneaking into the curling rink and shooting hockey pucks, chipping the ice and drinking warm beer. Sweating profusely in the heat. That’s how I learned to talk to a girl. It was Marco.
So now that the glory days are gone he’s moved on I haven’t seen him in a while how I wonder how he’s doing. I wanna run into him at a bar and find the people he’s been consuming. He’s been making them laugh I’m sure, a good laugh. He’s been slowing down time again and living life on the razors edge of hilarity and stupidity and bravery and mockery. He’s who he was and I miss that.
All of this quest this place to pursue life the next song to write it comes from people like this. The ones you would see around the bend. That you could hold every day and find that place and roar around in a fast black car your brother had.
I wanna see his face in the crowd with no names and show him he made me stand up when I was quiet for the 33 years I’ve been here. I’ve always stood in his shadows and I want him to See I could be just like him. Roaring and ready to win and a true friend.
I wish we never moved away cross town I wish he was here to stay. I wish it was weekends and I wish my family
Kept Him close to stay.
You realize the ones you loved and lost to Life changing can always stay. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it all the same. Or whatever the hell that means
Side note: he loved Zack Brown Band, I’m gonna write a country song he would like
Song: Marco
The song:
(C)
How are you doing man
It’s been a while my friend
I miss those glory days
I miss those nights
(V1)
Backyard beers, 1am,
ZBB and I’m gone again
You used to know every word
You’d run with the polish girls
(pC)
Fire in his eyes
Told every lie
Still the heart of the show man
your mother was proud you were so damn loud
You’d red line till the end of the night
(C)
(Solo) a good honkey Tonk dance
(V2)
Marco you were such a crazy fool
We’d sneak around those avenues
Do you remember when we’d drive
In my brothers car doing donuts in the parking lots
(pc)
If I saw you I’d smile And say
I miss you brother how’s life these days
Reminisce of the things we miss
Have a beer on ice under valley park lights
(C)
Toes in the sand
