I don't know where the number comes from, but every time I look it up in a websearch it keeps going up. The latest number I saw was that 85% of people don't like their jobs. Imagine that, 6 out of 7 people spend a third of their lives wishing they were doing something else. That begs the question, what is wrong with most of us? Also, what is that seventh person doing all week long and how do I do that?\ I don't necessarily have the answer to either question. There isn't a cookie cutter answer, which is why not everyone teaches about it. Some problems are hard and you can't just pull out a procedure or checklist and make them go away. They take effort and experimentation. "Ugh," you say, "if I have to work at it, I might as well just do my job." Then you stare at your computer for another 8 hours and check your watch until its time to go home. Why are we in this mess? The short answer is that your work culture sucks. I hear you saying, "That cannot be, the emails and vision statement say that we are innovative and our corporate survey shows that this is a great place to work." So, it's just you, right? You're the only one at your company who gathers around the water cooler and talks trash about the latest policy, or makes fun of the yearly state-of-the-company meeting. But what can you do about it? Join me in the conversation and let's talk about it.
