To follow up on Arthurs mindset monday's post, I decided to look up 5 hindrances to self-mastery by Master Shi Heng Yi (tedx talk) again.
I saw this particular talk a few years ago and found it to be a simple and profound way to look at self-discipline or self-mastery.
All of us are walking up a mountain, to see the sights on top. Along the way we'll meet people, that are walking down and will tell you what they saw up there. But ultimately, its up to you to find your way to the top and see for yourself as the process and realizations are different from someone else.
There are 5 hindrances that he speaks of:
- Kamacchanda or Sensual Desire (pleasures & distractions)
- Byapada or Ill Will / Aversion (negative mind)
- Thinamiddha or Dullness / Heaviness (lack of energy, lack of motivation)
- Uddhacca or Restlessness (worry about the future or regret about the past, unable to stay in the present)
- Vicikiccha or Sceptical doubt (indecisiveness)
Master Shi Heng Yi speaks of RAIN, in order to release you from any of these.
1. Recognize (what state of mind you are in)
2. Accept (accept and allow situations and people to be the way they are)
3. Investigate (your own emotional & mental state) why did this happen, what are the consequences of staying in this state
4. Non-identification (practice “I'm not the body, not the mind, not my emotion, I can see all 3 aspects of myself)
Today was actually a really good day for me to watch this as well. As I found myself struggling with Thinamiddha. You can also explain this one as Sloth or Torpor. And I was definitely feeling the torpor (the state of not being active and having no energy or enthusiasm). It is something I'm very familiar with and it shows up from time to time. I have long accepted that it happens and just having my daily pull-ups to do, managed to break me out of it.
Which of the hindrances do you often struggle with? And what process do you use to alleviate yourself out of it?
