Why First–Then Boards Work
Transitions and unexpected changes are tough for many children on the spectrum. A First–Then Board is a visual tool that shows your child what needs to be done first (non-preferred activity) and what comes next (preferred activity).
This strategy works because it:
- Creates predictability (kids see what’s coming next).
- Motivates with reward or preferred task.
- Reduces anxiety during transitions.
Example:First: Put toys away 🧸Then: Play outside 🌳
🛠️ How to Use It at Home
- Print or draw a simple board divided into two boxes.
- Use pictures, symbols, or words your child understands.
- Place the non-preferred activity in the First box.
- Place the motivating activity in the Then box.
- Show your child the board and guide them through the steps.
- Praise and reinforce when they follow through.
