What if playing more golf also meant building deeper connections with the people?
The ones in your network that you really like, admire, and have "wanted" to spend more time with but life has just been too busy to make it happen?
I have had so many times in my life when I run into someone or they cross my mind and instantly I'm met with two feelings: Joy and Guilt.
Joy because they are such a wonderful person that I truly admire and want to spend more time with, so this is a little dopamine or maybe even a serotonin hit.
Guilt because I just haven't made it a priority to connect with them. ๐ฌ
Golf is such an incredible game and inherently a stage prime for building deep bonds with playing partners. But most people don't make that happen. Most of the 24 years playing this game, I know I didn't.
Just hit the shot, toss in a compliment or joke, then repeat for 4 hours. Shake hands and thanks for playing.
I want to challenge the How You Golf members here; all of us.
The next round we play, whether your focus is on playing well and shooting a career round like recently did (fun video recap with Billy on that round here); OR
You're just out to enjoy some exercise.
Let's make it a priority to get curious about our playing partner:
- What are your other hobbies?
- What's the focus for you in this chapter of life?
- What question are you working to answer in your life right now?
We ALL have our own answers to questions like these. Which means we all have challenges we are taking on.
Like new recruits going through basic training, what builds strong bonds is SHARED struggle. Our very own Army ret. and other vets in this group can speak to this specific experience far better than myself, but we've all had something like this in life. Let's make our next round out there, one where we let our playing partners know we are curious and supportive of them.
Let's take this great game of golf to an elite level where we truly have a bigger impact on other souls dancing around with clubs and balls just like us.
It's easy to be so focused on ourselves and our golf game.
I challenge you all, myself included, to welcome a new challenge: Better Golf through Building Bonds.
If you're up for the challenge, drop a fun GIF in the comments.
P.S. Those people we like and admire but haven't spent time with? Next time they cross our minds, let's send them an invite to hit some golf balls. It's a great way to show them some love and maybe introduce them to the game we all love ๐ซก
