Its Sunday which is usually the day I do my weekly reset (other days might work better for you). I have struggled to find a balance between making everything PERFECT, and enjoying time off with my family so over time, this has been distilled down so that I spend no more than 3 hours max (and usually much less!) just getting the house in a 'good enough' order for the week starting tomorrow.
Below is my weekly reset plan (broken into stages). You can pick and choose, or follow along exactly. I'd love to know what works for you and what doesn't.
Rules:
- No deep cleaning.
- No organising drawers.
- No starting projects you can’t finish.
- Phone away unless used as a timer or for music.
You’re aiming for visible order and mental relief. Not a full clean!
First things first, clear the noise!
Kitchen reset (30 mins):
Do this in order:
- Empty dishwasher / drain rack
- Load everything dirty (even if it’s not “full”)
- Wipe only surfaces you touch (worktops, sink, hob)
- Take rubbish + recycling out
Stop when it looks calm, not perfect.
A reset kitchen quietly removes background stress for the rest of the day.
2. One laundry action (15 mins)
Pick one:
- Put a load on
- Fold what’s already dry
- Strip beds and start wash
One action only.
3. Quick floor sweep (15 mins)
- High-traffic areas only
- No moving furniture
- No getting on hands and knees
This is about sensory calm. Clean floors change how a house feels instantly.
4. Living area reset (25 mins)
Set a timer.
- Remove anything that doesn’t belong there and dump it in a basket
- Straighten cushions
- Clear surfaces
Do not deal with that basket yet!
5. Bedroom reset (20 mins)
This is about tonight, not Instagram.
- Make the bed
- Clear bedside tables
- Put tomorrow’s clothes out (even roughly)
This makes tonight more restful and tomorrow calmer.
6. Deal with the “dump basket” (15 mins)
Now you return things:
- If it takes under 30 seconds → do it
- If not → park it in a single “to deal with” spot
No side quests.
7. Food setup (30 mins)
Pick two:
- Chop veg for the week
- Marinate meat / prep one tray bake
- Portion snacks
- Make soup or slow cooker meal
Not a full meal prep. Just remove friction from the week.
8. 10-minute admin sweep
Set a timer. When it ends, you stop.
- Clear email notifications
- Write a short list for Monday (max 5 items)
- Check calendar for the week
This reduces your mental load for the start of the week.
If you have 15–30 minutes left
Do one of these:
- Water plants
- Clean bathroom sink + loo only
- Empty bins upstairs
- Wipe fridge shelves you can see
Stop before you’re tired.
A good Sunday isn’t made by doing more. It’s made by: - removing friction
- lowering visual noise
- setting up small wins for tomorrow
If you do 60–70% of this, your Sunday has already done its job.
