Hey hoopers,
Quote of the day: "The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital." - Joe Paterno
Quick question: Do you have a real training schedule, or are you just showing up to the gym and winging it?
Most players don't have a plan. They do whatever feels good that day, some shooting, some ball handling, maybe some conditioning if they're motivated.
But without a structure, you're not improving, you're just staying busy.
Here's what a real training week looks like:
Monday: Ball handling + finishing 20 minutes of ball handling drills (stationary, then on the move). Then 20 minutes of finishing at the rim from different angles. Left hand, right hand, floaters, contact finishes. Film yourself and watch it after.
Tuesday: Shooting + footwork 30 minutes of form shooting and game-speed reps. Focus on footwork before every shot, are your feet set, is your base balanced? Then 15 minutes of defensive footwork drills. Slides, closeouts, stance work.
Wednesday: Conditioning + game speed This is your hardest day. Full-court ball handling, transition finishing, defensive sprints. Everything at game speed. If you're not tired, you didn't go hard enough.
Thursday: Skill work (your weakest area) Pick the one thing you're worst at and spend 45 minutes just on that. Can't finish left? Do that. Shot is inconsistent? Form shooting only. Struggle with decision-making? Watch film and take notes.
Friday: Light shooting + rest Easy day. Form shooting, free throws, maybe some stretching. Don't go hard, your body needs to recover before the weekend.
Saturday/Sunday: Games or rest If you have a game, play. If you don't, rest or play pickup. Don't do heavy skill work on the weekends, that's when your body recovers and gets stronger.
Here's the truth:
This isn't flashy. It's not complicated. But it works because it's consistent, it's focused, and it gives your body time to recover.
Most players fail because they go too hard every day and burn out, or they don't go hard enough and never improve.
Structure keeps you on track.
If you want help building a schedule that fits your season and your goals, I've got a plan built for you inside phase 2.
Have a plan, work the plan,
Tyler
P.S. Winging it might work for pickup. It won't work for varsity.
