Hi, I'm Katie 👋
I'm starting my 29th year as a full-time high school teacher — so if anyone tells me they don't have time to homestead, trust me, I get it. This whole thing runs on evenings, weekends, and whatever energy is left after work. I'm also a mother of five (only two still live at home) who has come to terms with having very limited time, patience, and energy, but who still wants to do traditional things, live life slower while I'm at home, and teach/learn skills that benefit my family and my heart. I bake sourdough a couple times a month, make my own yogurt, and dehydrate giant zucchinis before they take over my kitchen (anyone who's grown zucchini knows the struggle). I've got a growing raised bed garden, a small chicken flock, and I'm just getting into composting. None of this is my full-time job. It's just what I do because I love it — and because there's something satisfying about making things yourself, even in small amounts, even on a Tuesday night. I started this group because I wanted a place for people like me: not trying to go off-grid, just trying to do a few things the homemade way, around a life that's already full. Glad you're here — go say hi in the welcome thread below!

Welcome to Homestead-ish! 👋
Glad you're here. Quick rundown before you dive in: This is for you if: - You have a day job (or three jobs, or a kid's soccer schedule) and homesteading has to fit around real life - You're curious about chickens, raised beds, food preservation, or composting — even if you've never tried any of it - You want real answers from people actually doing this, not just "move to the country" advice that doesn't apply This is NOT a place where: - You need 5 acres to participate - "Beginner" questions get side-eyed - Anyone's going to judge your zucchini plant for dying (mine have too) To get started: 1. Introduce yourself below — where you're at, what you're curious about, what "homestead-ish" means for your life right now 2. Check out the categories (Discussion, Wins/Fails, Gardening, Animals, Food Preservation) and jump into whatever's calling to you 3. No pressure to post right away — lurk, learn, ask when you're ready Drop a comment: What's the one homestead-ish thing you've been wanting to try but haven't started yet?

Fall gardening!👨‍🌾
I transplanted some of the seedlings I’ve started recently! Tomato, Japanese eggplant, and one jalapeño 🍅🍆 They get to rest in their new beds overnight to get ready for tomorrow’s sun!

Feeling sour…🥖
…in the best way possible! Confession: I’m a “lazy” sourdough baker. 🍞 My starter lives in the fridge until I’m actually in the mood to bake. Then I pull it out, feed it a couple times until it perks back up, bake my loaf (or two), and the rest goes right back in the fridge until next time. Please don’t let anyone convince you that you have to babysit your starter. You really don’t, once it’s established. Even easier — get some mature starter from a friend and just stash it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it! Spoiler: I’ll be baking later this week! Stay tuned!
