Zabbix
Zabbix is a comprehensive monitoring and observability package. Although there is a paid enterprise licence available, the free version works perfectly fine.
I monitor all my network assets, vm's, amd Webpage workshops using this.
The application works primarily on a server - agent relationship basis, to leverage the most information, but there are simpler icmp agentless options for just ping/alive confirmation.
For those who wish to try Zabbix you can download the Server using this link
Simply select the options relevant to your configuration, it will then provide the commands you will require.
Once your Zabbix Server is installed make a note of the IP Address, you will need this for your agents
Once installed use the same link to configure your agents, again select the correct Zabbix Component for your agent requirements and use the commands.
Once you have installed your agent you will need to update the configuraiton so that it can talk back to your server and server to it.
if using Linux go to the zabbix_agentd.conf file and edit it using your editor (e.g. nano or vim)
Locate the line in that file that says "Server=" and make sure that this IP address releates to your Server NOT your Agent
A little further down there is a line for "Listen Port=10050", uncommment this
Now scroll further down to "ServerActive=" and agin make sure this IP Address is your Server NOT your agent
Lastly, scroll down a little further and find the hostname line, ensure that the Hostname you enter matches exactly what you use when your configuring the Agent in the Zabbix Server Web UI, or it wont work.
Once your done, Save and Exit
Lastly open up Port 10050 using command ufw allow 10050
Now Restart and Enable the Zabbix Agent using command systemctl restart zabbix-agent && systemctl enable zabbix-agent
Next you can create your new host within the Server Web UI
Note:
  1. ensure the Host IP is the Agent Host IP Address
  2. Hostname must match exactly
  3. Linux Zabbix Agent ensure Port 10050 is entered.
Once the New host has been saved, wait a few moments and the ZBX icon will go Green, if it doesnt then check your settigns again.
