Here's the wise old monk's answer:
A young man once asked a wise old monk,
"Master, when making important decisions in life...
should I follow my heart or my mind?"
The monk smiled and poured tea into two cups.
Then he asked,
"If a bird had only one wing, could it fly?"
"No," replied the young man.
"It would fall."
The monk nodded.
"Then why do people keep trying to live with only one?"
The young man looked confused.
The monk continued:
"The heart feels."
"The mind thinks."
"The problem begins when one tries to rule without the other."
He pointed to the first cup.
"If you follow only the heart...
you may mistake attachment for love,
impulse for wisdom,
and desire for destiny."
Then he pointed to the second cup.
"But if you follow only the mind...
you may choose safety over growth,
logic over meaning,
and comfort over what truly matters."
The young man sat quietly.
"Then which one is right?" he asked.
The monk smiled.
"Neither."
"The heart is a compass."
"The mind is a map."
"A compass tells you the direction.
A map helps you avoid the cliffs."
The young man listened carefully.
The monk continued:
"Let your heart tell you what matters."
"Let your mind tell you how to get there."
"When the heart and mind are fighting,
wait."
"When they are working together,
move."
The young man thought for a moment.
"And how will I know I've made the right decision?"
The monk looked toward the mountains and said:
"You won't always know."
"Every path contains uncertainty."
"But the best decisions are usually the ones where your heart feels at peace...
and your mind finds no reason to run."
The young man smiled.
For the first time,
he stopped asking whether to choose his heart or his mind.
And started learning how to listen to both.
Because a wise life is not led by the heart alone...
or the mind alone...
but by the harmony between them.
