While building new modules for my online course tailored for individuals with ADHD and co-occurring traits, I stumbled upon the Forer-Barnum Effect. Analysing this phenomenon sparked an immediate realisation: it connects seamlessly, and destructively, with the mechanics of impulsive spending. Have you ever been scrolling through your feed and stopped dead in your tracks because an ad felt like someone had literally hacked into your brain? You read words like: "Are you someone who has immense potential but constantly battles internal chaos and a lack of motivation? Do you crave structure, yet routine completely suffocates you? We have something built just for you." You think to yourself: “Incredible! How do they know me so well? This product is my destiny!” A few seconds later, it’s all over. Your card is charged, and you’ve just purchased another "revolutionary" planner, course, or gadget. What you mistook for a brand deeply understanding your soul is actually a highly effective psychological trap. When you combine the Forer-Barnum Effect, the neurology of the ADHD brain, and impulsive decision-making, you get the perfect recipe for unnecessary expenses—often referred to in the neurodivergent community as the "ADHD Tax." The Trap: The Forer Effect, or the "It’s About Me!" Illusion In psychology, the Forer Effect (or Barnum Effect) is our tendency to believe that vague, universally applicable personality descriptions are tailored specifically for us. This is how horoscopes and fortune tellers have operated for centuries. Statements like "Sometimes you are extroverted, but other times you need your space" apply to 99% of the human population. Yet, when framed in a personalised context, your brain screams: “Yes, that’s me!” Modern marketing has weaponised this effect. Copywriters no longer describe product features; they describe you. They use emotional catchphrases that resonate with anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed or tired. When the algorithm feeds you this text, it builds an instant emotional connection. You start believing that this specific product holds the ultimate cure to your unique struggles. More on
