Why Your Horse Feels You Before You Feel Yourself
When was the last time you truly felt calm… not just busy, but deeply at ease in your body?
Why Your Horse Feels You Before You Feel Yourself
Sometimes the problem isn’t the Horse
Sometimes the problem isn’t the horse… Sometimes it’s the stress we’re carrying in our lives. Many years ago I had a beautiful 17-hand chestnut Thoroughbred called Henry. He had been a successful racehorse and when he retired he became one of the quietest, most reliable horses anyone could ride. I competed on him for years. I trusted him completely. At competitions we even had to ride on a loose rein or “on the buckle”. While other horses were getting silly around the arena, Henry would calmly walk around like a gentleman. People used to say to me: “You must have spent hours training that horse.” But really it was simply trust between him and me. Then one day something strange started happening. I would stand on the mounting block… put my foot in the stirrup… and take it out again. On. Off. On. Off. I suddenly felt nervous about getting on him — even though once I was on, he was perfect. For years I couldn’t understand it. Later in life, after doing some personal development, I realised something important. At that time my life was under enormous stress. A 27-year marriage had ended. There were constant issues with neighbours and the council. One neighbour even set dogs onto my horses and one of my mares was badly attacked. Then we sold the property to people we later discovered were scammers, which turned into a long court case. All that stress had been building inside me. And my horse was simply mirroring what I was carrying. This is something I later noticed when helping children learn to ride as well. Many came from difficult homes, and before they could feel confident on a horse they first needed to rebuild confidence in themselves. That’s why I created Heart-Centred Healing, a course designed to help people rebuild confidence around horses. Because sometimes the answer isn’t more riding lessons. Sometimes it’s understanding what the horse is reflecting back to us. If you’ve ever lost confidence around a horse, you’re not alone. I’ve added some free lessons inside my community if you’d like to explore this.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the Horse
"No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle." — Winston Churchill
For older equestrian owners, the bond with a horse often shifts from the adrenaline of youth to a deeper, more refined partnership built on years of shared wisdom and quiet trust. Here are some reflections and quotes that resonate with the experience of lifelong horsemanship: Reflections on Lifelong Horsemanship - On Enduring Passion: "If you like it and you can, just go and do it!" — Advice from a 93-year-old horsewoman.
