The Problem Isn’t You — It’s The System
Let’s be honest for a minute…
The dog grooming industry hasn’t just made things hard —it’s set groomers up to fail.
Not because you’re not good enough. But because of what you were taught to prioritise.
From the very beginning, the focus isn’t the dog…
It’s:
👉 How many dogs you can get through in a day
👉 How fast you can complete a groom
👉 How to stay “on schedule”
👉 How to keep pricing competitive
In most multi-groomer salons, success is measured by numbers.
“How many dogs did you do today?”
“Can you fit one more in?”
“Why did that groom take so long?”
So you learn very quickly…
Speed = good groomer
Slowing down = problem
And that’s where everything starts to break down.
Because no one is teaching you what to do when the dog can’t fit into that system.
No one is teaching you how to:
❌ Pause when the dog is overwhelmed
❌ Recognise the early signs before it escalates
❌ Adjust the groom without feeling like you’re “falling behind”
❌ Say “this isn’t safe to continue” without guilt
Instead, you’re standing there with a dog that:
Doesn’t like the dryer
Pulls away for nails
Freezes or fights on the table
And in the back of your mind is one thought…
“I don’t have time for this.”
So you push through.
Your rush. You hold a little firmer. You try to just “get it done.”
And then the dog escalates.
Now it’s snapping.Thrashing.Completely shut down.
And it feels like it came out of nowhere…
But it didn’t.
We just weren’t given the space — or the skills — to see it earlier.
This is the part no one talks about…
👉 The industry teaches you how to complete grooms but not how to work with behaviour
👉 It teaches output but not regulation
👉 It teaches speed but not awareness
So when things go wrong…
We blame ourselves.
“I should be able to handle this.”“Why does this dog hate grooming?”“Am I just not good enough?”
When in reality…
You’ve been trying to fit a living, emotional animal into a system designed for production.
And those two things don’t align.
When you start shifting away from:“How fast can I finish this groom?”
To:“What is this dog telling me right now?”
Everything changes.
That’s where grooming becomes safer. That’s where dogs start improving. That’s where you stop dreading names on your books.
And that’s exactly why we teach the
Pause–Observe–Adjust method.
Not to slow you down…
But to give you a system that actually works inside real salon pressure.
