Selection or default — how did your inner circle actually get built?
Chapter 12 has a line that costs something to sit with:
"Most men's inner circles are determined by proximity rather than selection."
Not chosen. Inherited. The people who ended up with the most access to your plans, your money, your fears, and your progress mostly got there because they were standing nearby when your life happened — childhood, the old job, the family table, the neighborhood.
That's not an accusation. Some of those men are exactly who you'd pick. But most of us have never actually run the check.
So run it. In writing, not in your head — the writing is what forces the specificity.
List the people with the most access to your actual life. For each one:
  1. Does he tell you the truth when it's uncomfortable?
  2. Does his life reflect standards you actually respect?
  3. Is he invested in your growth, or in your staying where you are?
  4. Does he hold a confidence without exception?
  5. Is he the same man in private as in public?
  6. Has his loyalty ever cost him something?
Then the real question: would I choose this man for this level of access if I were selecting deliberately today?
Two things worth saying before anyone takes this too far.
First, this isn't a cutting-people-off exercise. The chapter's actual instruction on most dangerous people isn't confrontation — it's distance and information control. You don't announce anything. You just stop handing over what you can't afford to have distributed.
Second, forgiveness and distance are not opposites. You can forgive a man completely and still not give him access to your plans. A man who forgives and then restores trust with no change in demonstrated pattern isn't practicing forgiveness — he's practicing self-neglect dressed up as virtue.
Discussion: Which of the six criteria is hardest for you to apply honestly to someone you've known a long time — and what do you think that difficulty is protecting?
Answer in the thread. Specifics, not generalities.
