started something with his 80s metal albums. 😀 it got me thinking of my favorite prog metal bands, but a lot of them didn’t start in the 80s. So, I wanted to start this thread. As I mentioned in Tm’s thread, Operation Mindcrime by queensryche is my all time favorite concept album.
But then there’s Kamelot! Oh how I love these musicians. They blew my mind with Epica, a concept album based on Goethe’s Faust. Roy Khan’s vocals are tremendous and Thomas Youngblood’s guitar scorches.
Then they release a second album finishing the Faust concept called The black halo. I didn’t think they could top Epica, but they did!
After Roy left the band, I was worried about what they’d do without his voice. They released the concept album Silverthorne with Tommy Karevik. OMG! Another masterpiece and Tommy’s voice is amazing.
Other Prog metal bands that I love:
Dream theatre - between dream theatre and Queensryche, I became a huge prog metal fan.
Fate’s Warning - their albums Perfect Symmetry and Parallels were my introduction to them. James LaBrie of Dream Theatre lends some backing vocals in the song Life in Still Water.
Epica - I think they actually fall under symphonic metal, but their Consign to Oblivion album falls under a concept album. It’s about the Mayan civilization.
Within Temptation - I fell in love with Mother Earth from their debut album, but their best album is a concept one called The Unforgiving. It is based on a comic book series by Steven O’Connell.
