So a few years ago, I worked for an influencer/guru in the finance industry. He was specifically in the credit niche teaching people how to get more credit. He had over 110k subs on YouTube (his bread and butter) and a little bit less on IG, and FB. The guy earned $100k a month during his peak, just from YouTube ads. So, on top of our UGC live call a couple of weeks ago, I'm sharing these tips on how to contact or deal with influencers.
They receive hundreds of messages PER DAY.
If you contact them for a deal, don't be disheartened if they don't reply on the first time. It might just get buried from all the clutter. These relatively big influences hire full teams to handle their social media account. On our case, I managed the social media team and I had one per social media account handling all the replies. Yes, influencers aren't always the ones who answer the replies. There's someone else trained to speak like them. I oversee the conversations just to be sure we were on brand.
Tip: To get noticed, comment on some of their posts and then mention you messaged them about a gift/deal. That would get the one managing rummaging the influencers DMs.
Find someone who knows the influencer. It's a small world. There's always someone in your circle that knows SOMEONE. On our case when we needed the influencers to collab with us, we hired people who were kind of "social media pimps" (sorry for the lack of term). These people were so extroverted they always knew someone who could help. Where do you find them? I'm not sure how my boss found them but I'm seeing some on LinkedIn and IG.
They aren't ignoring your product or service.
Influencers have to be choosy with whom they deal with. If they think that your product is a little bit sketchy, no deal. Your first line is the social media manager. ALWAYS OFFER A SAMPLE PRODUCT FIRST so they can try it out before they can be comfortable enough to share it on their social media accounts. Remember, if an influencer easily agrees to a deal without even trying your product/service, then they would fall for any other product. Long term, their followers will notice this and would not buy any of their recommendations.
Which brings me to another point.
Some "influencers" have a ton of FAKE FOLLOWERS. Not all social media accounts are legit. You can easily buy followers out there. These fake followers will also comment fake stuff. Before dealing with an influencer, always check if their following is ORGANIC. Check their follower profiles if these look legit. Check their comments. You'll notice fake followers have the same comments over and over. Some would just spell out a word. Some fake followers would comment a random neutral message. If you see these signs, run away.
Grow your following too. It helps influencers get "friendlier" with you.
Like I said earlier, legit influencers are a bit more choosy with whom they work with. They will have the team check out your profile and your business. They would generally want to partner with a business that's already doing well. They're trying to maintain an image too, you know. This goes back to my original tip. Give them samples especially if you're new or a small brand FOR NOW. You'll get big someday, until then, you're going to have to be CREATIVE or GENUINE.
They might ignore you because they're already tied to another product.
Yep, they might have already dealt with another competing or indirect competitor that is stopping them from promoting your product/service.
Extra Tip:
If you're relatively new. It is easier to get deals from smaller influencers around the 10k following. They have less messages and you'd likely get a reply. These are ideal if they're growing rapidly since their influence would also grow with you. My boss never forgot the ones whom helped him when he was just small. When he got big, he helped those people out.
At the end of the day, these deals with influencers should be a win-win for both parties. I would say most people are reasonable to a point. Don't rely on one target influencer. Make a list of a bunch of influencers. This is a quantity and quality operation. You might get rejected by an influencer for reasons nobody knows. Always have a backup plan.
Please check it out. I think it's super important to plant seeds everywhere you go. It also doesn't hurt to be NICE, genuinely nice to people.
