“He who has a strong why can bear almost any how” - Friedrich Nietzsche
Yet, most people are blind slaves to their desires.
Deep down, they have NO idea why they’re even running their businesses.
And until you realize your WHY, it doesn’t matter if you have the best systems and strategies in the world, you will unconsciously do EVERYTHING you can to self-sabotage your own results.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate” - Jung
And this is the very reason why 99% of people give up and never achieve their goals.
And it’s also the reason why 99% of people constantly fall into ruts.
So by the end of this post, you’ll have a FULL blueprint on finding your purpose and a never-ending source of motivation.
The first thing you need to do is find your core catalyst.
You’ve probably never heard of it (that’s because I made it up lol)
Essentially, it’s the deepest reason behind why you TRULY want to achieve your goals.
And there’s a very simple method to find your core catalyst.
I call it the Why Ladder.
You basically keep asking yourself why you want to achieve your goal 5 times until you get to the true answer. The last answer is your core catalyst.
(By the way, this is the same thing you do in sales calls)
I’ll go first to give you an example.
What’s my goal? $20k/month
Why? So I can live the lifestyle I want, retire my parents, avoid going to college, don’t have to pretend to be nice to a future boss, I can go where I want whenever I want, can get more beautiful and higher-quality women, high-quality social circle of successful men, etc.
Why? So I can have complete freedom over my life and be respected.
Why? I hate being controlled and being told what to do, I’m scared to death of living someone else’s dream of me. And I want to prove to my parents, my brothers, my friends, my ex-girlfriends, my younger self that I could do it all along and be exceptional.
Why? Because I didn’t feel good enough my entire childhood. I felt less respected and recognized than everyone else. So I want to be someone that people can’t deny is great.
Why? Because I want to be the best in the world at what I do. My entire life I’ve been mediocre in everything. Now it’s my turn to be #1 and wake up as many people as I can along the way.
That’s my example of the 5 Whys. Whenever I feel like procrastinating, I remind myself of this. It instantly boosts my focus and gets me into work mode.
Note: By the time you get to the fourth or fifth why, things can get dark. I’ve gone through this exercise with clients on the phone and it can lead to hidden child trauma, insecurities, deep-rooted fears, etc.
And that’s completely okay. You have to make your desires conscious. Even if they’re negative or trauma based. Because you can use your traumas. Or they can use you. Your choice.
So please, if you haven’t already, do this exercise for yourself. It’ll only take you about 10 minutes and it will serve you for years to come in more ways than you can imagine.
I promise you, there’s nothing else that you could possibly be spending your time doing that’s more important than this.
Stop scrolling, stop coping, stop consuming. And do this exercise. Don’t move on until it’s done.
Alright, so now that you’ve identified your core catalyst, there’s one more framework I’ve created to find your purpose.
Before I give it to you, I need you to understand this first.
There’s two different types of motivation. Extrinsic & Intrinsic.
Extrinsic motivation = Working because you want an external reward like money, a car, a house, a better lifestyle, etc
Intrinsic motivation = Working because the WORK is the reward. It gives you internal rewards like fulfillment, purpose, freedom, abundance, etc.
Extrinsic motivation will get you started.
Intrinsic motivation will keep you going.
Therefore, you want to build up as much intrinsic motivation as possible.
Your core catalyst is important. But whenever you combine it with sources of intrinsic motivation, you become relentless.
There’s 5 different forms of intrinsic motivation.
Purpose: You feel a strong responsibility to help other people solve a problem
Enjoyment: The work is genuinely fun and you want to spend your time doing it
Mastery: You want to master whatever your craft is
Curiosity: You want to learn more about your craft
Autonomy: The freedom from knowing you can do whatever you want and it’s only a matter of choice
The more of these you have, the harder you’ll be to beat.
But let’s focus on purpose for a bit.
Purpose is arguably the most important source of intrinsic motivation.
After all, the purpose of life is a life of purpose.
Because your work has to matter to you AND to others or else money will lose its meaning to you and no one will buy your stuff.
So you have to figure out why you and your business exist (besides the money)
You can get started on doing that by answering the below questions.
If you went out of business tomorrow, who would care?
If you stopped working, would the future of the world be any different?
Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
Why do you need to make sacrifices for this thing?
And one last question you’ve probably never thought of.
Most people ask “What would you do if you knew you could succeed?”, but a much better question is - “What would you do if you knew you would fail?”
That way, you’re truly doing it because you internally want to. Because in business, you will always solve problems, no matter what. But you can choose which problems you want to solve.
So choose the ones that make you excited to get out of bed.
That way, your interests and income are directly aligned.
(And while we’re on this topic, I hate how people say “Money doesn’t make you happy”. Because that’s only true if you don’t like what you do. It’s the nature of the work that makes you happy, not the money itself.
And as for the other forms of intrinsic motivation, enjoyment, mastery, & curiosity are achieved by picking something you love.
And if you’re currently not doing something you love (that also gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment), who are you living for?
That’s a question you have to answer yourself.
So that’s it.
Constantly keep these principles at the forefront of your mind, don’t lose sight of the why ladder, your core catalyst, and continue to try to build as many of the forms of intrinsic motivation as you can.
So whenever you feel like procrastinating or you just don’t want to work, remind yourself of these principles and why you’re doing all this.
Not for the car, not for the house, not for the vacations, fuck all that. Whatever you reflected on is what you’re truly getting out of it.
And I promise, this will make the work so much easier and you’ll feel so much more fulfillment and peace. And you’ll make a lot more money too.
Hope you enjoyed it.
Live purposefully,
Andrew
