HOLD!!!
When you give your life to God there are times when His time is a little slower than yours. Sometimes you feel like a runner at the starting line. Feet in the starting blocks, muscles constricted ready to pounce, slow steady breathes pulling oxygen into your lungs, you feel like a cat ready to pounce, or a barrel horse at the gate. You have your friends and family around you cheering you on, and you are just waiting for that gun to go off and you’re ready to follow through with all of the promises and training. You’ve made the decision to go, you’ve done all the training and prep work, you’ve told everyone about your path, and they’ve asked when?
Sometimes the Lord tells you to hold for the perfect moment, and doesn’t tell you when that is going to be. Professionally, I have sent all the emails, I have done the interviews, I have packed up the stuff (so much stuff), I have the plan ready. I’ve prayed and prayed, and told my friends and family, and they’ve prayed and prayed. You know its a great plan, because God gave it to you. You have your resignation letter ready to go, ready to take a step into a whole new season. The cattle are just staying out of reach, you know once the Lord gets them in the catch pen you’ll get them loaded onto the trailer and you can breathe the sweet breath of victory.
Church, I have so many analogies and anecdotes, so many commas and semi-colons. Have you read my article on our path with God? (Footsteps) That moment when He is about to set you down and set you on a mission is the hardest for me? When I have a task set on me I am like a feral dog with a bone. Have you ever seen a racoon trap? Those cute little trash pandas will get caught in the simplest thing, a hole and a prize too big to fit through the hole. Sometimes all they have to do it let go, but the feeling receptors in their adorable little paws trigger a brain response that won’t let them release the treat.
Sound like anyone you know? Nope? Me either. The crazy part is that poor adorable racoon will hold onto it’s treat and watch me approach it with…. a blanket or some other humane item, because my chickens love when racoons visit. Yes, I am saying sometimes we are like racoons, we won’t let go of something so we can run. This is a perfect anecdote, circles under the eyes, few extra pounds, hissing at approaching people, and caught by our own curiosity. God telling us to let go (no I didn’t switch gears), and us, the poor hissing racoon hearing what we want to hear.
We scour the bible for excuses to hold on to that thing we love so dearly. Just like the Pharisees and the law. Maybe that thing is your KJV bible, and you won’t abide any other translation. There is God holding onto you telling you to let go so you can run ahead and help that person who doesn’t understand a lick of Shakespearian English. So you let go, you’ve been so sure you were right and finally you submit. Yes Lord, I will go and sit at the sinner’s table and tell them about the Lord our God in simple English.
You’re finally ready to go. Prepped and knowledgeable. Holy Spirit inspired. A clear path ahead. God says not yet.
UGH! WHY?!
Just like in the play Hamilton the war wasn’t won at that last victory, it was won when the enemy submitted. Battle is all about timing, too early and your enemy may be too ready, too late and your soldiers may have lost momentum. That devil in the ear of your task is ready for you to arrive. They are whispering all kinds of objections and lies into the ear of that poor unfortunate soul (cue sea witch). So now you are on someone else’s time.
I love reading and listening to J Werner Wallace. If you have never read Person of Interest you really should. I think apologetics is so important for every follower of Christ. The analytical mind of a Los Angeles cold case homicide detective is a wonder to witness. I love most books by investigators. FBI, detectives, CIA they write in a nice linear fashion. One thing leads to another, and to another. I loved choose your own adventures as a kid too. Flipping around the book to see where the story will lead to next. The author setting up the timing in just a perfect way so every nuance and distraction falls into place. The bible is very much like that in a sense. You start to see how the protoevangelium in Genesis 3:15 perfectly links to the message in Revelation.
The nice thing about the choose your own adventure books is you can go back and do it again. Yes, you know how it ends, but the great thing is the trip. How many different ways can the author get you there? Watching the timing of it all. Looking at God’s plan is like watching the master author write it out. We know how it ends but the timing of everything is so perfect. Two thousand years later I open a book written by J Werner Wallace and he spells it out for me, why Jesus came when He did. It was so perfect and obvious and I missed it.
As I sit in His arms, poised and ready to run into the fray, ready to hit some people with some knowledge, He says wait. His timing is perfect. His timing. Hold.
