With Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad announced just this week, there’s a special kind of buzz in the air. And for this Carl’s Column, we’re looking at getting in on the football action, which will envelop this country over the next few months, taking everyone sentient being along, for an emotional roller-coaster ride.
Chances are you’re either new to the country, new to the sport (as it’s worshipped in Portugal, and especially if you know it only as ‘Soccer’), or both. So pull up a chair (maybe one of those rickety plastic ones outside your local bar, because that’s part of the training!), and let’s get familiar with the national fixation that’s going global this year, some of the players, and how you can fit in as a footy fan, and feel much more Portuguese."
