Blatant Intellectual Arrogance
This photograph was published in the Expresso newspaper to illustrate the news item that dissects Andre Ventura's television interview with SIC in the context of his presidential candidacy for Belém.
I read the article, riddled with the ideological bias to which Expresso has accustomed me to, and then I read the comments that expose the embarrassing prevalence of uncritical repeaters, those haunted by the ghost of Salazar, fools and presumptuous people who consider themselves intellectually superior simply because they are left-wing.
The regime, its heralds, and those who vote for them out of clubbishness or dog-like loyalty, have still not managed to realize that André Ventura (AV) is precisely:
1. The product of the regime's failure;
2. The product of growing incompetence, of unfulfilled promises, of selective deafness and blindness to what displeases a significant and growing number of Portuguese people who do not depend on subsidies or jobs. Portuguese people who, after the pornographic confiscation to which the regime subjects them, still manage to create jobs and produce wealth (which will be re-confiscated), and in addition, support their children and grandchildren, the homeless, the gypsies, the illegal immigrants, and others;
3. And this is the product of repeated impunity, particularly when it comes to corruption, but not only.
Failing to understand that AV is anything but stupid and that he has masterfully managed to ride the wave of national discontent, the wave that the left and the center, which have perpetually held power for 51 years, have never been able to surf because they are incapable of freeing themselves from the supranational yoke; because they are incapable of breaking out of the bubble of ideological prejudice and the hypocrisy of political correctness; and because they are incapable of understanding that times have changed, and so has the social psyche.
And the media, the commentators, and the parrots who repeat them fail to grasp that the ignominy embodied in their comments and on their walls is counterproductive, despite the feeling of empowerment, intellectual superiority, morbid and almost orgasmic pleasure, and the illusion that the repeated harassment of dissent is supported by the pursuit of a "greater good"… Democracy and freedom of expression.
And that it is thus, through insult and cancellation, that the enlightened defeat those who disagree with them, those who dare to think and feel differently, and, on top of that, have the nerve to challenge the status quo… Oh their beloved status quo.
The truth is that the more they smear Chega and its electorate and the more they belittle AV, the more platform they grant them, the more visibility they give them, the more they stoke the latent revolt and discontent in Portuguese society, and, most importantly, the more they fuel the desire of those who are dissatisfied to vote against the status quo; against mainstream discourse and against what the regime propagates because, in plain English, they're fed up!
Therefore, it's not about "stupidity," nor "political illiteracy," nor "extremism," nor "fascism," but rather about fatigue, disillusionment, discontent, despair, revolt, and a desire for change. And these emotions should not be dismissed but confronted. However, the vaunted April regime has stopped doing so (if it ever did) and entered into autistic mode a long long time ago.
The votes for Chega and AV are, in large part, protest votes, and ignoring them is atrociously stupid.
And systematically insulting more than a million Portuguese people from all walks of life, all groups, all social strata, and all levels of academic and cultural differentiation is bullying.
And not having the discernment, the wisdom, or the humility to reflect on the mistakes made is blatant intellectual arrogance, and it's a price to pay.
If the regime and the left don't want Chega to continue growing, they must backtrack and start listening to the growing cry of protest instead of ignoring, belittling, and mocking it.
There exists, silently and fearful of insult and discrimination, a majority that is increasingly dislodging itself in order to protest by voting Chega and, in January, by voting AV, which may be "populist," may be "trauliteiro," and may be anything else the prophets of doom and die-hard leftists choose to call it. But it is undeniable that, despite all its flaws, AV managed to find the right formula to reach a significant segment of the Portuguese population who had resigned from participating in national political decision-making and who had lost hope. Such a feat is not the work of a stupid man.
Stupid are all those who remain incapable of recognizing it, or even considering it.
Humility is needed, and it's time to step out of the bubble and turn off the television, because there is a Portugal that the regime's propaganda insists on hiding or romanticizing, but which is anything but romantic and is neither peasant, nor fascist, nor extremist, nor xenophobic, nor denialist, nor stupid, nor naive. It is, indeed, very real, very lucid, and very fed up with this mess.
As for me, aware that there are no ideal solutions or perfect candidates, I am only certain that I will not vote for genocidal candidates or woke progressives!
