When Does the IRS Start Accepting Taxes?
As tax season comes underway, there are a few tax changes this year that filers should be aware of. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) also will start accepting taxes as early as January 26, but most Americans will wait several more weeks before finalizing their returns. Why It Matters Taxes are due on April 15 unless you file for an extension with the IRS. Missing this deadline can lead to serious issues, ranging from a failure to file penalty to interest on unpaid taxes or even the loss of your refund. When Does the IRS Start Accepting Taxes? Americans can start filing for taxes on January 26, and experts say the earlier you file, the better. “While you want to make sure you have all the necessary paperwork and spend time double-checking all necessary documentation to ensure it’s correct, the general rule is the sooner you can get your return submitted, the better,” Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek.

Earned Income Tax Credit - EITC
The IRS encourages use of the EITC Assistant to check eligibility or to visit the child-related tax benefits comparison for basic eligibility rules. The IRS also reminds taxpayers that the quickest way to get a tax refund is to file an accurate tax return electronically and choose direct deposit. When to expect EITC refunds The IRS expects most early Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit card by March 2, 2026, if they choose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the return. Some taxpayers may have access to their refunds sooner depending on their financial institution’s process. Where’s My Refund? will be updated with projected deposit dates for most early EITC/ACTC refund filers by Feb. 21, 2026.
