Daily Irrigation Tip: The Hidden Leak Test
One of the most expensive irrigation problems is also one of the hardest to see.
A hidden mainline leak can waste hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water before it becomes obvious.
Quick Test:
- Make sure all irrigation zones are OFF.
- Check your water meter.
- Write down the meter reading.
- Wait 30–60 minutes without using any water.
- Check the meter again.
If the meter moved, water is going somewhere.
Common culprits include:
✅ Underground mainline leaks
✅ Stuck irrigation valves
✅ Broken valve diaphragms
✅ Leaking backflow devices
✅ Cracked fittings underground
Field Technician Tip:
If you hear water moving through pipes when no zones are running, don't ignore it. That's one of the biggest warning signs of a hidden leak.
Finding the problem early can save a significant repair bill and prevent landscape damage.
