Here’s a bit of history on it :)
Brutalism is an architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century, particularly after World War II, as a response to the need for affordable, functional buildings. It originated in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and France, and was heavily influenced by the work of Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, whose use of raw concrete (béton brut) inspired the movement’s name.
Brutalist architecture is characterized by its bold, geometric forms, exposed materials, and a focus on honesty in structure and function. It became widely used for public housing, government buildings, and universities during the 1950s to 1970s, symbolizing strength, utility, and social progress.
Brutalism quickly spread to many parts of the world, including communist countries where it found a strong foothold. In nations such as the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and other Eastern Bloc states, the style aligned perfectly with socialist ideals of equality, functionality, and collective identity. Its use of raw concrete and monumental forms symbolized strength, permanence, and the power of the people. Brutalist architecture in these regions was often used for government buildings, housing complexes, and cultural institutions, structures meant to serve the masses rather than the elite, making it a defining feature of the communist-era urban landscape.
