When we strengthen our awareness, we can learn to edit our mental software. One way to do this is through "Affirmations".
Whenever you say "I am" followed by other words, those words become your reality. Have you heard yourself say: "I'm hopeless", "I'm a loser", "I can't get it together", I'll never be able to do this", or anything similar?
If so, you might have found that your thoughts became true.
"If you say you can, or you say you can't, I believe you."
It's called "self-fulfilling prophecy".
I grew up in a culture that taught me negative self-talk. I learned as a young adult that talking in this way creates "self-imposed limitations". Overcoming these limitations is part of my life's work.
I discovered that I could program my thoughts and feelings for favorable outcomes. I'll give you an example of how I apply this in my life.
When I first arrived in Taiwan, I knew a few hundred words of Mandarin. They were not everyday words. They were names of acupressure points and herbs.
When I got here I said to myself: "I am becoming fluent in Chinese." I said this every day for my first year in Taiwan. "I am becoming fluent in Chinese." "I am becoming fluent in Chinese."
Even when I felt frustration, I acted as if it was true. I was becoming fluent in Chinese. I reminded myself, again and again, every day.
I often embarrassed myself. Sometimes I didn't even know. If I knew, I would take a step back, inquire and assess my mistake. I kept going.
I acted as if I was fluent, sometimes with good results. At other times, I experienced mixed results, and occasionally, blank stares or outright avoidance.
You can do this for yourself. Say to yourself every day: "I am becoming fluent in English."
Try it! It works!

當我們提升自我覺察時,我們就能學會修改自己的心理軟體。其中一個方法就是透過「正向肯定語」。
每當你說「我是……」並接著其他詞語時,這些話語就會成為你的現實。你是否曾經對自己說過:「我沒救了」、「我就是個失敗者」、「我沒辦法把事情搞定」、「我永遠都做不到」或類似的話?如果有,你可能也發現這些想法真的成真了。「如果你說你可以,或你說你不行,我都相信你。」這就叫做「自我實現預言」。
我成長於一種文化,從小就教導我以負面方式對自己說話。年輕時我才了解到,這種說話方式會創造出「自我設限」。克服這些限制,是我人生使命的一部分。
我發現我可以為了達到理想的結果,而對自己的想法與感受進行編程。讓我舉一個我親身實踐的例子:
當我第一次來到台灣時,我只會幾百個中文詞彙,還不是日常用語,而是一些經絡穴位和中藥的名稱。
那時我告訴自己:「我正在變得越來越流利地說中文。」在我來台灣的第一年,我每天都對自己說這句話:「我正在變得越來越流利地說中文。」「我正在變得越來越流利地說中文。」
即使我感到沮喪,我仍然表現得好像這是真的。我正在變得越來越流利地說中文。我每天一次又一次地提醒自己。
我常常讓自己出糗,有時候自己甚至沒察覺。如果我發現了,我會退一步,詢問並檢視自己的錯誤,然後繼續前進。我表現得好像我已經很流利,有時有不錯的結果,有時結果混合不一,偶爾還會碰到一臉茫然或直接被冷落。
你也可以為自己這麼做。每天對自己說:「我正在變得越來越流利地說英文。」試試看!真的有效!
