Our fellow community member, Butterfly Love, shared this stunning and fascinating information with me yesterday about the Greenland shark, and I wanted to pass it along to all of you.
Did you know about the Greenland sharks?
These mysterious animals live in the icy waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic. Scientists believe they are the longest-living vertebrates ever discovered.
Researchers studying the Greenland shark estimate that some individuals may live close to 500 years more. One of the sharks examined in a scientific study was estimated to be around 392 years old.
Just imagine that for a moment.
A shark alive today may have been swimming the oceans in the early 1600s… long before modern cities, long before most of the world we know today even existed.
Even more incredible, these sharks grow extremely slowly and may not reach maturity until they are around 150 years old.
Their slow pace of life in the deep, cold Arctic waters seems to be part of what allows them to live for centuries.
Nature never stops reminding us how extraordinary life on this planet truly is.
Butterfly Love, thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of wonder with our community. Moments like this help us remember that the oceans still hold ancient lives and quiet mysteries worth protecting.
Little acts add up.
Curiosity leads to care.
And care leads to protection. 🌎🐋
**Greenland sharks can grow 11–13 feet long and weigh over 1,000 pounds. The cloudy eye often seen is caused by a tiny parasite that attaches to the surface of the eye.**
