Understanding "Flipping the Lid" – Why Your Child Can't "Just Calm Down"
Ever asked your child to "calm down" or "use your words" in the middle of a meltdown... and it made things worse?
Here's why 👇
The Hand-Brain Model (Dan Siegel)
Make a fist with your thumb tucked inside your fingers. This is your child's brain:
Thumb = Downstairs Brain (emotions, survival, big feelings)
Fingers wrapped over = Upstairs Brain (thinking, reasoning, problem-solving)
When your child feels safe, the upstairs and downstairs brain work together. They can think, talk, and regulate.
But when they're stressed, scared, or overwhelmed?
Those fingers fly up. The lid FLIPS. 🤯
The thinking brain goes OFFLINE – and the survival brain takes over.
