The Upstairs & Downstairs Brain – A Simple Way to Understand Your Child
Ever wonder why your child can be so thoughtful one moment... and completely lose it the next? Dr. Dan Siegel's "Whole-Brain Child" model explains it perfectly 👇 🧠 Upstairs Brain (thinking brain) Problem-solving, reasoning, empathy Making good decisions Regulating emotions 🧠 Downstairs Brain (survival brain) Big emotions, impulses, reactions Fight, flight, freeze Protection mode When kids feel safe, both floors work together. But when they're overwhelmed? The upstairs goes offline. 🏚️That's not bad behaviour – that's brain science.

@Annette Timothy thank you sometimes having the simple facts makes it easier to comprehend and remember in those trying moments.
Understanding "Flipping the Lid" – Why Your Child Can't "Just Calm Down"
Ever asked your child to "calm down" or "use your words" in the middle of a meltdown... and it made things worse? Here's why 👇 The Hand-Brain Model (Dan Siegel) Make a fist with your thumb tucked inside your fingers. This is your child's brain: Thumb = Downstairs Brain (emotions, survival, big feelings) Fingers wrapped over = Upstairs Brain (thinking, reasoning, problem-solving) When your child feels safe, the upstairs and downstairs brain work together. They can think, talk, and regulate. But when they're stressed, scared, or overwhelmed? Those fingers fly up. The lid FLIPS. 🤯 The thinking brain goes OFFLINE – and the survival brain takes over. You can learn more in our Trauma-infomed Training - Foundations coming soon....

Understanding "Flipping the Lid" – Why Your Child Can't "Just Calm Down"
Welcome to Empower YOUth H.O.ME Toolkit (Start Here)
Welcome — I’m really glad you’re here. I’m Mel from Empower YOUth, and this is the new home for the Empower YOUth H.O.ME Toolkit (Home-Oriented Mentoring & Empowerment): a strengths-based, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming space for all carers supporting children and young people (including ASD/ADHD). This community isn’t about “fixing kids”. It’s about helping carers feel steady, clear, and supported — because your calm presence + clear boundaries are powerful. What we do here: Inside this community you’ll get practical, carer-friendly support such as: - Simple tools you can use at home (no clinical jargon) - “What to say” language for hard moments - Ways to understand patterns (so you’re not guessing) - A consistent approach: **safety first, then learning**, plus **rupture + repair** - Support that’s **firm and kind** (being therapeutic doesn’t mean no boundaries) How it works: - Everything is **self-paced** - I’ll be uploading tools and short lessons into the Classroom as we build the Toolkit out - You’re welcome to post general questions and wins in the community (please keep it non-identifying) What you can do today (before any downloads) In your next tough moment: 1) **Say less** and stay close (safety first) 2) Use one steady line: **“You’re safe. I’m here.”** 3) When calm returns, try **NOTICE** (a simple conversation structure): **N** Name what you noticed → **O** observation “I wonder…” → **T** Tell what you heard / validate → **I** invite choice → **C** check permission → **E** Experiment try one small plan ## Optional: introduce yourself (only if you want) Comment below with: - Age band: **Foundations (4–7)** / **Building Skills (8–12)** / **Independence (13–18)** - Your biggest challenge right now (mornings/school refusal, screens, aggression, bedtime, shutdown, etc.)
